Beerlao: Beer for the people

About Beerlao and Lao Brewery

Lao Brewery Co. or, Beerlao, was founded in 1973 and began with humble origins. Headquartered in the Province and Capital of Vientiane, Beerlao was a joint venture with foreign investors and local Lao businessmen. Annual beer production in the early days of Beerlao was modest: Three million liters of beer, 1.5 million liters of carbonated drinks and 120 tonnes of ice.

Beerlao was the original. We’ll call it the OG. First sold in 1973 on the local markets. Beerlao has since expanded its line to numerous alcoholic beverages, purified drinking water and carbonated drinks. They even have an IPA, popular these days in Texas, my home!

Beerlao: Lao Brewery Brands

Beerlao and Lao Brewery are not only brewing beer and alcoholic beverages. Lao Brewery also has a purified drinking water line along with a line producing and distributing carbonated drinks. From Beerlao to Tuborg, Carlsberg and Somersby. Lao Brewery continues to grow, expand and produce crafts known and enjoyed worldwide!

Beerlao: How it’s brewed?

If you didn’t know, grains are used for brewing beer. This is no different for the Lao Brewery. Locally grown, Lao Jasmine rice is used to ferment and brew Beerlao. Malts are imported from France and Belgium. Hops are imported from Germany, no surprise here.

History of Lao Brewery

Like many Southeastern countries, Lao has a complicated contemporary history. French colonial rule, Japan invades, USA invades along with Vietnam in the 1970’s and a regime take over in 1973. The 1973 Lao liberation led to a one system of rule. Lao Brewery Co was handed over to the state of Lao and foreign investors lost their shares of the company, as is typical protocol for socialist regimes.

Come 1993, foreign investors partnered again with the now State run brewery. These investors were from Italy and Thailand. The influx of cash obviously allowed for an opportunity to expand production and marketing efforts. Great news for Beerlao!

Where to buy Beerlao?
